When I was in the throws of mothering my 5 children, I remember well the Mother’s Day ! It was always the best and the worst day. The children where always so excited and would plan something special. Some years it was a cooked breakfast for Mom in bed or flowers and crafts they had made. The problem was all that excitement prompted them to be up at an ungodly time in the morning and present me with the gifts, hugs and giggles while I was still in the throws of sleep. ( I am not a morning person)
Of course I greeted them with a happy face and enthusiasm and ate whatever burn offering they where presenting all the while they where jumping on my bed. My best friend used to call around noon each year and wish my a Happy Mothers Day and then we would laugh about what special event the children had planned this year and hoped that some day some-one would suggest that Mom would have just maybe appreciated getting to sleep in till perhaps noon, since those days where long forgotten.
Here is a little something I found that I would like to share with you all.
Have you ever wondered what the word MOTHER means?
Maternal, although this word is normally used to describe mothers in the context of their instincts and ability to natural and unconditionally love their children, it can also describe the tenderness of a mother or of any woman who is close to you.
Optimistic, have you ever noticed that mothers are seldom ever negative when it comes to their children. Mothers always expect and see the best in their children.
True, Mothers are true to their children. They never lie to them. They encourage truth.
Highest- for children the mother is the person to whom they look up to as the highest authority in their lives.
Enduring, a mother’s love is enduring and eternal. It never ends.
Revered, mothers are honored and revered by nearly everyone in society. Most people consider their mother to be either a hero or at least someone to whom they can look to for advice, wisdom and courage.
Happy Mom’s day to every-one.
I have never been one to make a list and proclaim New Year Resolutions. However a new year is an opportunity to reset if you will and do some personal reflection and identify things that you need to change or improve in the coming year.
This year I want to make some concrete changes in my way of thinking and my spending habits. Our lifestyles are so different than even a few years ago with a Tim Horton’s, Starbucks or Timothy’s on each corner its so easy to “just grab a coffee” while out and all of a sudden you have spent enough on coffee and treats throughout the month to pay a utilizes bill. Once upon a time picking up dinner or eating out once a week was acceptable but it has turned into 3 or 4 times a week. Yes, it’s justified because of that busy schedule, getting home too late or just feeling too tired to cook tonight. It’s time to start thinking about how to save some money, but more importantly making more time for what’s important.
Here are the few things that I am doing to give myself the “gift of time” and re-nourish my life this year. Maybe one of them will appeal to you also.
- I will be spending less time checking Face book, Twitter and Pinterest and more time preparing and enjoying home cooked.
- Instead of spending valuable time coming and going to the gym, and the monthly expense of the gym, I am returning to walking, using our Wii Fit and my personal library of workout DVDs.
- I have cancelled my cable, as it is fairly simple these days to find all the shows you love on Netflix or television station websites. I purchased one small adapter and conveniently my ipad now can be hooked directly to the television at anytime to watch what ever I choose to watch. It hasn’t changed my lifestyle much, but I will definitely be enjoying the extra $700 per year!
- The last time will be the hardest. I decided to make a no-drive-thru rule for food. Enjoying dinner or a Sunday breakfast out with friends is a wonderful treat, but this grabbing fast food and bringing it home or worst yet… eating in the car for convenience sake is a habit to break !
My gift of time will be to indulge in some old fashion recipe hunting, grocery shopping and food preparation for our home. It may be with less time wasted on social media and mindless television watching that I might even get to enjoy a good book this year or spend more time making memories instead of watching them with my children.
